SCENAR, is an acronym for the expression "Self-Controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulator". It is interesting to note that a Russian creation utilized English words to develop this acronym. 

SCENAR is now internationally recognized as an expression that literally understood to mean "a tool that's used to help heal oneself and bring good health".  The tools commonly used for SCENAR applications (DENS Therapy) are the various models of DENAS and DiaDENS devices produced by the DENAS MS Corporation in Yekaterinburg Russia.

SCENAR systems were originally developed for the Russian space program to overcome the unique problems of space travel. Pharmaceuticals were impractical due to the specificity of each drug, leading to a need to store a large variety and quantity of drugs, and also due to the introduction of toxins into the water recycling system, such that one toxin exposure may effect the whole crew.

A Russian team of doctors and scientists, based at Sochi University and led by Alexander Karasev in the late 1970s, developed a method of treatment that was energy efficient, multi-applicable, portable and also non-invasive. They were the first people to achieve repeatable therapeutic treatment using electrical signals to stimulate the immune system. Head scientist Professor Revenko claimed that there were very few illnesses SCENAR devices could not treat and often cure. Tests conducted in Russia have since shown that SCENAR based treatment proves effective in 80% of cases.

SCENAR Devices were immediately dubbed as 'Star Trek' Devices by the press because of its origins and its similarity to the 'all-curing' medical scanner used in the series, Star Trek.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED that In Russia today, DENS therapy is a part of the mainstream medicine and it is registered by the Russian Ministry of Health as an official independent method of treatment. It is taught in medical colleges as a separate discipline and may be pursued by students as a major professional specialization.


Effects Expected from DENS Treatment

l Pain-killing effect (lasts for 4 to 48 hours)

l Effect of parabiosis in the nerve endings of the peripheral nervous fibers blocks the transmission of pain impulse.

l Dominant focus in the cortex of the brain, suppresses the pain focus.

l Current considerably reduces oedema around the nerve fibers.

l Inflammatory effect - With inflammation there is an inflammatory focus, which is Anti-Oedema - Reduces swelling.

l Anti-shock, Anti-allergic affect - can be observed with food allergy, rash, bites, rhinitis and broncho-spasm.

l Hyper perfusion - (blood vessel dilation) effect

l Fever Reduction (Antipyrogenic) Effect - Obtained by treatment of the main blood vessels.

l Normalization of Metabolic Processes

l Increased solute levels in blood.  Stimulated active consumption of oxygen and nutrients increases venous flow and removal of metabolic by-products.  Increase in lymphatic flow.

l Normalization of cell, tissue and system function

l Normalization of the immune system.  Due to SCENAR input, neuropeptides are produced, which cascade down to create new bio-active compounds.  These will correct and balance the relation between biochemical and functional systems in secondary tissues and cells.

l Normalization of the hormone balance.  In connection with the production of neuropeptides.

l Faster regeneration of tissue - increased healing of wounds

l General Effects - from increase of levels of energy and immunity

l Better sleep - better appetite - better mood

In Russia, there are hundreds of thousands of cases of SCENAR devices in use, along with several thousand practitioners who currently utilize the device as their principal treatment instrument. A vast wealth of information is available from research papers, clinical reports and training manuals. The device is used on most types of disease or injury: circulatory, sensory, respiratory, neurological, genito-urinary, musculo-skeletal, gastro-intestinal, endocrine, immune and psychological disorders.


How SCENAR Based Systems Function

DENAS & DiaDENS (DENS devices which use a very advanced SCENAR technology) gives pain relief in three ways:

1) by providing a new signal, dominant focus is formed in the cortex, which causes de-localization of the previously dominant focus of pain and activates the parasympathetic nervous system;

2) by changing the sensitivity and decreasing the lability in the thick A and thinner C nerve fibers. The faster A fibers depolarise the substantia gelatinosa (glial cells) and pain impulses arriving via the C fibers are prevented from continuing (Gate theory).

3) by activating cortical and sub-cortical centers to send descending efferent impulses that increase blood flow and stimulate local humoral mechanisms, viz., the production and release of endorphins and increasing the activity of enzymes, such as acetyl cholinesterase, histaminase and kinases.

DENS devices like all advanced SCENAR devices use biofeedback- by stimulating the nervous system; it is able to teach the body to heal itself. The device sends out a series of signals through the skin and measures the response. Each signal is only sent out when a change, in response to the previous signal, is recorded in the electrical properties of the skin. Visible responses include reddening of the skin, numbness, stickiness (the device will have the feeling of being magnetically dragged).  As it is moved there is an increase in the electronic clattering of the device.

There are three types of Nerve fibers.  They are classified according to nerve diameter, speed of conduction, neurotransmitter and function.  C-Fibers are the slowest being as they are non-myelinated.  These account for 70% - 80% of nerves within the body.

Because of the primary purpose of basic electrical-stimulation devices, only the A and B fibers are targeted leaving the C-Fibers untouched.  Another secret of any advanced SCENAR device is that it targets mostly C fibers and it is these fibers that are mostly involved in DENS Therapy.  C fibers are sensory fibers that the brain gets its information through, which allows it to filter different stimuli and thus maintain  dynamic equilibrium.  The failure of the brain to maintain dynamic equilibrium within its own body is the ultimate cause of disease.

The C-fibers, which comprise 85% of all nerves in the body, react most readily to the electro-stimulation and are responsible for the production of neuropeptides and other regulatory peptides.

The body can get accustomed to a stable pathological state, which may have been caused by injury, disease or toxicity.  The DENS device catalyses the process to produce regulatory peptides by stimulation of C-fibers for the body to use where necessary. It is these neuropeptides that in turn reestablish the body's natural physiological state and are responsible for the healing process. As these peptides last up to several hours, the healing process will continue long after the treatment is over. The large quantity of neuropeptides and C-fibers in the Central Nervous System can also result in the treatment on one area aiding with other chemical imbalances, correcting sleeplessness, appetite and behavioral problems.

 Neuropeptides

There are various types of neurotransmitters, which are usually specific to a certain type of nerve or function.  Neuropeptides were the last to be discovered.  They withdraw down a cascade creating other neuropeptides and other bioactive compounds that are specific to different systems.  Thus a bioactive compound low down in the cascade of degeneration can be biologically active elsewhere in the body from where the originating neuropeptide was released.  It is therefore possible that the degenerating cascade can influence all systems albeit at sequential points in time.  Neuropeptides also influence cellular activity at the DNA level by altering gene structure to either increase or decrease gene expression.

Neuropeptides are also involved in memory regulation.  SCENAR treatment will therefore address not only the systemic influences of pathology but also the psycho-emotional aspects.


The advanced DENS version of SCENAR treatments alters nerve physiology such that Refractory Times where a nerve cannot normally conduct another impulse are shortened.  In this way, DENS treatment is 100% safe.  Any DENAS or DiaDENS device cannot input an electrical impulse into the body without the body being able to respond.  By altering the input signal in every way possible such that no 2 consecutive signals are identical, the body cannot accommodate to the signal and is forced to respond.

Input signals to the body are very similar in form to natural nerve impulses.  The DENS device modifies the pathological signal to the brain so that the brain becomes aware and thereby triggers an increased response to the pathology.  Healing times are markedly reduced and more dramatic as a result of the massive response to DENAS or DiaDENS treatment signals.

Pain relief using any SCENAR based device has been found to be more profound than using narcotics due to the neuropeptide cascade effect.  This was tested on cancer patients and people with bone fractures.

SCENAR devices, in general, have also been credited with vastly reducing recovery times. Russian athletes have been known not only to compete after serious injuries, but even to break world-records. In accident and emergency wards, its ability to aid recovery is used to help victims of cardiac arrest, massive trauma and coma. It has recently been discovered to also aid in improving learning ability, memory, sexual function and improved physical health. Without a doubt, many trials in Russia have realized the extraordinary effectiveness that an advanced SCENAR's usage provides for pain relief.  Both cancer and fracture patients have found more pain relief from the release of natural opoids after a SCENAR treatment than from administered opiates.


DENAS & DiaDENS Devices Assist in Pain Management

The DENAS & DiaDENS devices have been used to assist in pain management and relief in all types of disorders- circulatory, respiratory, neurological, genitourinary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, immune, gastrointestinal and even psychological discomfort. A SCENAR device is particularly effective for various types of organic and referred pain, musculoskeletal pain, and, as evidenced by its use for the Russian Olympians, for acute conditions such as fractures and sprains.

Effectiveness of DENS Based Therapy

It is important to note that a DENS device does not treat a particular disease or condition. However, results reported for all types of SCENAR devices have been remarkable. There seems to be very few ailment categories that it cannot assist. Improvements in particular conditions are simply the result of applying procedures developed over two decades of the device's use to effect a change in skin/body response to a SCENAR signal/impulse.

In the UK, the devices are licensed by the British Standards Institute for pain relief only. In The US, They are approved under a 510k exemption as a tens machine with bio-feedback. However, because of the nature of the device, stimulating the nervous system, the Russian experience is that Scenar affects all the body systems.

The Russian experience suggest that it can be effective for a very broad range of diseases, including diseases of the digestive, cardio-vascular, respiratory, musculo-skeletal, urinary, reproductive and nervous systems.

It is also useful for managing ENT diseases, eye diseases, skin conditions and dental problems. It has also been found beneficial in burns, fractures, insect bites, allergic reactions, diseases of the blood and disorders involving immune mechanisms; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic disorders; stress and mental depression, etc.

It is known to give real relief from many types of pain


How Often Is Treatment Needed?

In order to create a continuous flow of circulating regulative peptides DENS Therapeutic action must be given quite often. For any fresh injury or any acute inflammatory process treatment needs to be intensive, ideally once or even twice daily. For chronic conditions, treatments are ideally given three or four times a week initially. As things improve the frequency can be reduced.

A course of treatments will vary from individual to individual, and takes into account such factors as the stage of the pathological process, the person's age, state of health, and so on.


Is It Safe?

As the DENS device impulse is similar to endogenous nerve impulses, it is non-damaging and safe. Only people with cardiac pacemakers are not allowed to have any type of SCENAR treatment.

Children and pregnant women can be treated, and even animals enjoy it!


Contraindications

In over twenty years of use in Russia and Europe, no unwanted side effects have been noted. Since the impulses sent by the device are similar to the body's own impulses, these are quite safe, even for children and pregnant women. The peculiarities of SCENAR-therapy means that there are few contra-indications.

The obvious contraindications are cardiac pacemakers and other such electrical implants, individual intolerances, alcohol intoxication and obscure infectious diseases.

With all this in mind, wherever other electrotherapies have effects, DENS-therapy will also be useful, and indeed, it has been found to be very useful when other electrotherapies have failed. As with all therapies/methods that stimulate rather than suppress the body's own healing power, the initial effect may be a "healing crises" that makes the person feel worse before feeling better. A lack of energy and general malaise may result as old problems and toxicities are brought to the surface for treatment and elimination. This necessary bit of housekeeping soon passes and is followed by new heights of wellbeing, increased energy and a more refreshing sleep.

This downloadable 2 hour training film was originally developed in the Russian Language and dubbed over with an attempt at English translation.   The film uses the DENAS device for its demonstrations; however, any DiaDENS user running at 77 Hz will likely find that the DENAS training is extremely helpful for DiaDENS systems as well.  Because the film clearly shows actual DENS-Therapy in action, many users find that this is one of the best DENS training media-materials available today.

Although the actual instruction in the film is brilliantly accomplished, the English translation attempt remains to be improved and is in the process of being re-done.  The availability of the new version is difficult to estimate, however, the current version still has great value as an excellent learning tool.
